Despite the exciting games, this was not the main story of the night. The most perplexing events of the evening were actions by controversial coach Avery Dixon. Dixon was nearly 45 minutes late to the NFL press conference to finalize the return details. Some sources indicated that Dixon was unresponsive to numerous attempts to reach him and only joined when NFL officials called him.

When a rattled Dixon showed up at the press conference, his explanation was, “I feel asleep on the couch.”

Additionally, Dixon has failed to complete the filing of all his paperwork, despite being the most vocal of the coaches about the return. His office simple references that they continue to have “technical difficulties,” though it cannot be confirmed with league sources.

Front office personnel were clearly frustrated by Dixon. “Look, I think any team would be thrilled to have any of these guys as their coach. Wilson and Glenn showed us last night they are ready to put a quality product on the field. I don’t think the same could be said for Dixon. To be honest, I think he gave a lot of teams red flags last night. It is not a given that he gets and offer to coach.”

Another team executive added, “The word that comes to mind is disappointing. I get these guys have all aged, but it is different with Dixon. In the past teams were willing to put up with his controversy because of his competitiveness. That was his main asset, but based on last night, that could be gone.” He added, “One thing hasn’t changed though. He remains the master excuse maker.”

When asked to comment on Dixon, Wilson would only say, “Everyone saw what happened tonight. I think people are intelligent enough to draw their own conclusions.”
