The Athletic: Wilson Dominates Glenn in Early Pre-Season Action

Anticipation throughout the league was at an all-time high last night with the announcement of the return of five legendary coaches. There was particular interest in the return of Cory Wilson, the only one of the five with a Super Bowl title. He took a laughing stock of an organization in Tampa Bay to an NFL record 19-0 record behind the MVP season of Vinny Testerverde.

Wilson and Ricky Glenn played two hard fought close games, with Wilson prevailing in both. In the first game, two key second quarter plays by the Saints proved to be too much for Glenn’s Cowboys to overcome in 29-22 Saints victory. The first play came early in the second quarter with the Cowboys up 7-0 and the Saints facing a 4th and 3 at their own 25-yard line. Wilson elected to go for it and Brees hit Ted Ginn on a short slant that Ginn turned into a 75-yard touchdown reception.

“There was no we could give the ball back to them and expect to win,” Wilson said. “We had no choice.” Glenn agreed, “We make that stop and we likely win the game. Very frustrating.”

The second big play came with just seconds remaining in first half and the Cowboys driving. Dak Prescott was hit by a Saints lineman and fumbled. Von Bell picked the fumble up and returned it 35 yards for a Saints TD with 2 seconds remaining in the half. This gave the Saints a 20-7 lead going into the half and proved too much for the Cowboys to overcome.

The second game was a defensive struggle as Wilson’s Steelers scored a late TD to pull away against Glenn’s Patriots 14-7. Afterwards Glenn simply said, “We have to learn how to pick up the blitz and how to blitz, otherwise we are in trouble.”
